A field of study that combines life sciences, law and economics in an innovative and international study program: Food Quality and Safety.
This blog will describe what you need to know about this field of study. As well why you should definitely consider making it your next study!
Food industry
The food industry is a highly complex and very diverse environment. It is the place for you if you are looking for a new study challenge!
If you love food and are interested in the process, then you know quality and safety are the main targets in food production. Characterizing, identifying and detecting quality and safety issues are key tasks for you when you want to investigate in the food safety and quality industry.
But what is the industry and study program like then? Well, one thing is certain in the food industry. You will not be bored, because you will be part of promoting public health as well combatting diseases. In conclusion, you are the one making the difference! How cool is that.
The program of food quality and safety mostly focuses on quality and safety of the products. Because of this it is very important to keep the complexity of the industry in mind. However, this identifies that extra challenge! As you are expected to combine all your skills. From life sciences and law to economics. If this has drawn your attention, then definitely keep reading. Because you might just have found your next Master’s degree!
Food quality vs. safety
Food safety and food quality are two important aspects in the food industry. These are two different concepts that collectively have the ability to ensure consumers that the product has met the industry’s standards to be purchased. Food safety refers to the concept that diseases like pathogenic microorganisms, misuse of food additives and contaminants such as chemical or biological toxins and adulteration are prevented, whereas food quality is comprised of a series of consumers’ attributes that as a whole determine the value of different products at the time of purchase. Some of these attributes are place of origin, freshness, colour, flavour, texture, taste, nutritional value, the animal welfare, fat content of foods, environmentally friendly production, and sustainable farming practices [8,9]. Although the two concepts have fundamentally different aspects, their collegial meanings make consumers purchase certified foods defined as one that has passed through various stages of the integration traceability methods and quality control systems. For example, if a type of food is contaminated with microorganisms, it can cause health hazards (i.e., food safety perspective) and quickly spread over food products (i.e., food quality).
